Her Prayer of Hope and Grace

Last winter I wrote about our sparsely attended Homeless Memorial Day.

This week, one of the event participants, CC, died.
… As we went around the circle, the woman began her prayer of hope and grace.

Did she know then that she would lose her battle with alcohol so soon?
This December, we will again gather to remember the people we lost and will be thinking of CC.

Rest in Peace, CC.

Memorial Day: A Good Way to Pay Tribute

As we remember the people who sacrificed their lives, our thoughts inevitably turn to the living who, following their service to our country, are now homeless. In January, Glendale counted 38 homeless veterans. Earlier this month, we were able to find seven of them and we will keep looking. And this week, a veteran staying in our shelter has moved to his own home.

By now, your in-box and your mailbox – if you have one – is full of ads for Memorial Day sales. If you want a more meaningful way to observe Memorial Day, take a few minutes to read the messages on the L.A. Times website.  Then plan to attend a local ceremony to honor fallen soldiers.

There are a number of events in Glendale on Monday, thanks to the Glendale News Press:

7:45 a.m.: Veteran’s Memorial Ceremony. Intersection of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue in Montrose. (818) 249-7171.

9:30 a.m.: The City of Glendale teams up with the Glendale Chamber of Commerce Patriotism Committee for a Memorial Day Ceremony, 613 E. Broadway, Glendale. Call (818) 240-7870.

Noon – 2:30 p.m.: First Congregational Church of Glendale hosts a Memorial Day Celebration with $1 hot dogs, 2001 Cañada Blvd., Glendale. There will be hot dogs, turkey dogs, bratwurst, beverages and a bouncer for children. Admission is free. Call (818) 243-2100.

1 p.m.: Forest Lawn in Glendale hosts its 96th annual Memorial Day Celebration with a reading of the Gettysburg Address, a musket and cannon salute, Civil War re-enactors and more, 1712 S. Glendale Ave. Admission is free. Call 1 (800) 204-3131.

Glendale Registry Week

RegistryIn an effort to end chronic homelessness in Glendale, PATH Achieve Glendale and the City of Glendale have joined Common Ground’s 100,000 Homes Campaign. 100,000 Homes is a national grassroots effort to find and place the most vulnerable, long-term homeless individuals into 100,000 homes by July 2013.

100,000 Homes Campaign in Glendale

The City of Glendale, PATH Achieve and a growing list of partners, are planning a Registry Week to find and identify persons who are homeless in Glendale. The goal of the Glendale Registry Week is to create a by-name registry of people living on our streets; allowing us to prioritize those who have been out there the longest and who are the most vulnerable. What we learn together during this week will help us reduce chronic homelessness in Glendale and will help assure we are targeting our efforts in ways that are life saving for the most vulnerable homeless.

Glendale Registry Week May 1-6th!

From May 1-5th volunteers will find and survey people living on the streets of Glendale. Surveys will be compiled into a database after everyday when teams return from surveying. On Friday May 6th in the Council Chambers at City Hall, the survey findings will be presented to the community. Please sign up to volunteer, or RSVP for the Community Debriefing here.

Join the Campaign- find out HOW YOU CAN HELP!

Volunteers and participants needed! Sign Up Here! LearnMore Here! The campaign is recruiting dedicated volunteers to canvass Glendale’s streets and survey the city’s most vulnerable homeless people. To ensure the most accurate count possible, we will survey individuals during the early morning hours for three consecutive days. Other volunteer and participation opportunities are available. Please visit bit.ly/GlendaleVolunteers to sign up, or see bit.ly/VolunteerInfo for more information about volunteering.

Sponsorships

Sponsorship funds will be used to cover any Registry Week costs that cannot be secured through donation. The remaining, and bulk, of the sponsorship funds will be put into a HOUSING FUND to benefit the placement and housing of Glendale’s most vulnerable homeless. When housing is secured for homeless individuals in Glendale the HOUSING FUND will cover move in costs which may include security and utility deposits.

Mary & Family Are Staying!

After just four short days, our friends and generous donors have contributed more than enough to keep Mary and her family housed!

Mary, Rubin and their three teenagers would have been homeless for the second time in less than a year had we not been able to pay the remaining $600 of their security deposit. Grateful and overjoyed for the help from our community and online donors, Mary was overwhelmed and without words when her Case Manager Nancy told her the family would not be evicted.

Many thanks to our donors & everyone who helped us raise the funds to keep Mary & family housed. Individual donors, the Rotary Club of Glendale (Noon) and Glendale Kiwanis all came together to make sure that Mary and her family would not have to leave their apartment at the end of this month.
